Question Worth Asking: Can Something Be Gluten-Free but Still Contain Wheat?
One of the best parts of building Taking Stock is hearing from you. Your questions keep us honest, sharp, and grounded in what really matters: clarity, trust, and nourishment that feels good.
Recently, Jayne from The Greensted Market in Zumbrota reached out with a question we know others may share:
“If the fiber is gluten-free, why does the package say it contains wheat?”
We love this question because it gets to the heart of transparency.
Gluten-Free vs. Wheat-Free: What’s the Difference?
Here’s the clearest way to explain it:
This product is gluten-free.
Our fiber partner produces Arrabina®, a prebiotic fiber made from upcycled wheat stalks.
Gluten, the protein that triggers reactions in celiac disease, is found in the grain of the wheat plant, not the stalk. The stalk contains only plant fibers that support microbiome health.
Arrabina® is manufactured in compliance with FDA gluten-free standards, and every batch is verified by independent labs.
It’s safe for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
Why the Label Says “Contains Wheat”
This product is not wheat-free.
Because the fiber is sourced from wheat, FDA regulations require that the label state “contains wheat” — even though no gluten is present.
That allergen statement exists to protect individuals with diagnosed wheat allergies, for whom this product may not be suitable.
It’s a distinction that matters:
-
Gluten-free = safe for celiac or gluten sensitivity.
-
Not wheat-free = not safe for those allergic to wheat itself.
Gentle on Digestion
Our prebiotic fiber, Arrabina®, is also third-party certified FODMAP Friendly.
That means it’s easier on digestion than many common fibers, like inulin, which can sometimes cause bloating or discomfort.
So for most people, including those with gluten intolerance, this fiber is a gut-friendly, nourishing ingredient.
Transparency Is Nourishment
What makes us proud is that this question came from Jayne, a longtime member of our community who cares deeply about clean, authentic food.
Her curiosity helps us sharpen how we communicate and ensures that we’re providing the clarity you deserve.
Thank you for asking the good questions; they’re what keep Taking Stock true to its purpose:
